Call for the Film Industry to Defend the ZAD
"We, filmmakers, call on ourselves to bite, to film, and to defend this territory which is beaten and hits back."

We, who work in the film industry, have heard the call to support the ZAD. This call was made by the film Vent d’Ouest (2018), formerly attributed to Godard, and latterly hailed as skilful parody. We have taken these well known phrases from his 1970 manifesto, entitled "What is to Be Done":
1 . We must make political films.
2. We must make films politically.
These two dialectical statements constitute the foundation of a wonderful text that dissolves and softens the boundaries between cinema and politics whilst demanding the hardening and clarification of positions. We cannot , for example, be on the side of the police and of the protestors.
To do 1 ., is to believe that there are real films.
To do 2. , is to know that truth is in the struggle.
So, if the film is a "fake" Godard, we’ve heard the truth in the call it makes. Its truth lies in the fact that there will be evictions this week at Notre-Dame-des-Landes, and that those who struggle there will have their houses destroyed. Those people have struggled over years against developers, against an airport and its world, and they won. The truth is that the State is unremitting in destroying collective experience, in destroying new and renewing forms of organisation, and in destroying a countryside that defends itself and the many people who live in it. As people who work in the film industry, we clarify our positions.
It is May 2018. We commemorate the 50th anniversary of May ’68. Making commemoration upon commemoration, the State paralyses action, petrifying it in museum cases. And it ignores the refugees, the train drivers, the students, the postal workers, the doctors and nurses, and the daily oppression in the suburbs… After his press conference at Cannes earlier today, the 12th May 2018, Godard established a legacy between the forces of revolt in May ’68 and the Zadists today. So, let’s make ourselves present and take action with our hands, position ourselves with our eyes, look with our feet and imagine thousands of different ways of living.

We, filmmakers, call on ourselves to bite, to film, and to defend this territory which is beaten and hits back. As we make films, to defend the ZAD is to defend an idea of experimentation, is to defend a real place that struggles in order to construct new imaginaries, is to expand the landscape of what is possible, to "open our eyes and to close off agony."
