In A Life Beyond Boundaries, Benedict Anderson describes how his renewed, post-retirement interest in film found expression in an enthusiasm for the work of "the young Thai genius," Apichatpong Weerasethakul and eventually a friendship with the artist/filmmaker himself (who would design the cover for a Thai edition of Imagined Communities).

In June, we republished Anderson's essay on the Thai reception of Apichatpong's Tropical Malady (2004). Below, we present a photograph taken by Apichatpong and offered in memory of Anderson.

This picture is taken from my home in Chiang Mai where Ben used to visit. I often think of his presence here.

Apichatpong Weerasethakul's latest film is Cemetery of Splendor. His exhibit The Serenity of Madness is currently on view at the MAIIAM Contemporary Art Museum in Chiang Mai.
