The tenth annual Historical Materialism conference began today. This year’s conference title is ‘Making the World Working Class’. The conference schedule includes a plethora of different papers, with a wide array of different thinkers speaking on everything from recent activism to critical theory to Marxist feminism to the relations between race and capital. Many of the most interesting and essential recent research projects and trends in Marxist and radical theory will be represented and discussed.

Two recent books published by Verso will be up for the Deutscher Memorial Prize, which is to be announced at the conference on Friday. These are Vivek Chibber’s important and controversial new book Postcolonial Theory and the Spectre of Capital and Leo Panitch and Sam Gindin’s essential new work on American political economy, The Making of Global Capitalism.

Peter Hudis will be speaking on a panel discussing 'The Unknown Rosa Luxemburg: Her writings on anthropology – political economy – and post-capitalist  society reconsidered'. Peter is the editor of the first volume in our major new Rosa Luxemburg series - The Complete Works of Rosa Luxemburg. He is also a joint editor, alongside  Georg Adler and Annelies Laschitza, of The Letters of Rosa Luxemburg. Both books will be available at the conference.

On Saturday there will be a roundtable discussion of Costas Lapavitsas' new book Profiting Without Producing: How Finance Exploits Us All - a meticulous analysis of the financialization practices that were behind the economic crisis.

Many other Verso authors will be speaking/chairing at the 4-day conference, including

Richard Seymour
Razmig Keucheyan
Costas Lapavitsas
Nancy Fraser
Owen Hatherley
Robin Blackburn
Esther Leslie
Peter Hallward
Alberto Toscano
Knox Peden
Eyal Weizman

There will also be a closing plenary session in which David Roediger, author of The Wages of Whiteness and How Race Survived U.S. History, will give a paper on ‘The Self-Emancipation of U.S. Slaves’.

Verso will have a stall at the Historical Materialism conference, where books by these authors, and many others, will be on sale (at a discounted price!).
