‘John Berger has made the world a better place to live in. I do not say this lightly.’ Arundhati Roy
To celebrate John Berger’s 90th birthday on the 5th November, Verso, Zed, Penguin and Smokestack Books are teaming up to offer a fantastic prize for Berger fans old and new.
We’ll be picking FIVE WINNERS (UK only) to receive a bundle of new Berger related goodies. Each winner will receive a DVD copy of the recent film The Seasons In Quincy: Four Portraits of John Berger, PLUS the following brand new books by or about Berger:
- A Jar of Wild Flowers: Essays in Celebration of John Berger (ZED), collected by Yasmin Gunaratnam and Amarjit Chandan
- Landscapes: John Berger on Art (Verso), edited by Tom Overton
- Confabulations(Penguin), by John Berger
- The Long White Thread of Words: Poems for John Berger (Smokestack Books), edited by Amarjit Chandan, Yasmin Gunaratnam and Gareth Evans
Tom Overton, editor of Landscapes: John Berger on Art, Yasmin Gunaratnam, editor of A Jar of Wild Flowers, and Mike Dibb, film-maker and director of Ways of Seeing, joined Gareth Evans to explore Berger's art and politics, the evolution of his own way of seeing, and its enduring relevance in the latest Verso podcast in collaboration with London Review Bookshop.
Ever since his seminal book and TV series Ways of Seeing in 1972, John Berger has revolutionised our understanding of art, language, media, society, politics and everyday experience itself. Ranging across novels, poetry, sketches, drawings, essays and talks, his work is always thought-provoking in the most profound sense, always unique, always deeply humane.
How to enter
Open up any Berger book, or listen to any Berger talk, and inspiring and insightful phrases leap out at you – a rich and enigmatic syntax of astute observation, honesty, compassion, solidarity and wonder.
All you need to do to enter the competition is tweet your favourite Berger quote using the hashtag #BergerAt90 between 10am GMT on Wednesday 2nd November and 10am GMT on Monday 7th November. We’ll then do the very difficult task of picking our 5 favourite Berger quotes from 5 different people to be our winners.
There are so many great Berger quotes, so we’ll re-tweet as many as we can to make it a celebration of his inspiring life and words.
